The special actions of a four-year-old dog named Baekgu have once again shown why dogs are man’s best friend.

Brave Beakgu dog saves his owner

Baekgu’s owner, a 90-year-old woman with dementia living in South Korea’s Hongseong district, went missing on August 25, 2021.

Police discovered Ms. Kim through a farm’s security camera leaving her residence with a small white dog.

Police and firefighters launched a search campaign, combined with volunteer citizens, who quickly fanned out throughout the area, even in the pouring rain.

Finally, after 40 hours, the search team discovered Ms. Kim in the middle of a field, about 2km from her house. 90-year-old Mrs. Kim lay collapsed in a damp area where trees grew high, obscuring her vision.

Police said that if it weren’t for the white dog next to Ms. Kim, they might not have found her. During the entire time I was away from home, the weather in the area was raining heavily, getting worse and worse, and the nights were cold. Thanks to Baekgu by her side, Mrs. Kim’s body temperature did not drop too low.

The rescue team used a drone to discover signs of the dog in the middle of a vast field. Ms. Kim was then taken to the hospital and has now recovered.

The brave dog Baekgu was honored at the ceremony

Baekgu’s brave actions were recognized, and local authorities awarded him a new title.

The Korean National Fire Service last year issued regulations allowing the appointment of honorary firefighters and rescue dogs. Baekgu officially became the country’s first honorary rescue dog.

During the title awarding ceremony, representatives of the authorities wore a wreath of flowers around Baekgu’s neck and a congratulatory cake.

Yang Seung-jo, Governor of South Chungcheong Province, said: “At a difficult time due to the epidemic, Baekgu has created an unbelievable miracle.”

Shim Geum-sun, the daughter of a 90-year-old woman, said the family adopted Baekgu three years ago after it was attacked by a large dog. The dog especially loves Mrs. Kim and is often by her side. “I was very worried when my mother was missing for many hours, and it was raining heavily. We were lucky for our family to have Baekgu,” Shim Geum-sun said.
