It’s a moment for any shelter dog when they finally find their forever home through adoption. But not every story has an ending. Sometimes circumstances change and dogs end up being returned to shelters leaving them feeling confused and unsure about what happened to their home.
This unfortunate situation unfolds for a dog who spent 500 days in a shelter before finding a loving family. Unfortunately after a week he was sent back to the shelter. Now he is looking for another home where he can be cherished forever.
The dog in question is Drogo, a pitbull who arrived at the Austin Animal Center in March 2022 after his owner faced eviction. Although gentle and well-trained, Drogo remained in the shelter for more than 500 days.
When he was adopted in a month, everyone involved thought Drogo had finally found his home. Unfortunately fate had plans.
Seven days after leaving the shelter with his family, Drogo returned. According to staff at the shelter, Drogo allegedly “nibbled” his owner, prompting them to bring him in.
News of Drogos’ return has deeply saddened everyone who cared for him. A heartfelt message from a shelter staff member on TikTok expresses how devastated everyone is about this turn of events. Drogo wasn’t among the dogs he stayed with at the shelter, but now he finds himself back where he started again.
“this is not fair.”
It’s always heartbreaking, when dogs end up back at the shelter after looking like they’ve found a home. Unfortunately, Drogo didn’t handle rejection well. He was feeling stressed and upset and barking more than usual.
“He seemed really frustrated about being at the shelter. Unfortunately there was no interest,” Austin Animal Center’s Kelsey Claire shared with Newsweek.
The shelter is now working hard to find another home for Drogo. However, they worry that potential adopters may have prejudices against him based on his bloodline and colour. “Being a black pitbull pitbull mix puts him at a disadvantage in some people’s eyes,” Claire explained. “Unfortunately, black dogs are often overlooked compared to colored dogs.”
Drogo will thrive in a pet-free home, where he can have time to decompress after his long stay at the shelter. He is available for adoption without a fee. can be reinforced.
If you are interested in giving Drogo a home, please contact the Austin Animal Center. Visit his adoption page for more information.
We sincerely hope that this time will bring luck to Drogo and that he will find his forever family soon!
