Meet Lily, the rescue dog whose survival story will keep you fascinated and motivated to take action!
Born in South Africa, Lily was left to fend for herself, living alone on the streets. She often wandered through villages and schoolyards, scavenging for scrap and rubbish just to survive. Nearby locals looked down on her, deeming her survival tactics troublesome and annoying. One afternoon, after she was foraging near a schoolyard, the headmaster saw her, and ordered two janitors to bury her alive.
Lucky for Lily, some loving individuals from the International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) were anonymously notified of the burial, and immediately went to her rescue. They found Lily 30 minutes later in a 5-foot deep hole, covered in dirt, barely able to breathe. That was when they named her Lily, their term of endearment for “warrior”.
Lily’s story swept the nation, highlighting the fact that more animal welfare programs are needed in South Africa. Not long after, he begins a humanities education program at the same school where Lily was kidnapped. The headteacher and the cleaners were also charged by the Cape Town court with animal mistreatment fines, as well as criminal sentences.
Lilly’s legacy continues today through IFAW’s comprehensive campaign helping to provide hand-sewn blankets for dogs living in animal shelters! Each blanket consists of individual fabric squares that each have a personal message written on them!

The good news does not end there. Soon after Lilly’s story hit the news, an animal rights journalist adopted her into her family forever. Real happiness then!
