Miley Cyrus once called her family, “America’s Most Dysfunctional Family.”
Miley Cyrus was only 13 when she rose to fame after getting the titular role in Disney’s Hannah Montana in 2006. But that wasn’t her first job. The nepo baby, who fans think deserves her popularity, once worked as a bra collector at her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus’ concerts.
Fans think it “explains a lot” about “America’s Most Dysfunctional Family,” as Miley once labeled themselves. Here’s the truth about the Flowers hitmaker’s first-ever job.
Miley Cyrus Was An Underwear Janitor At Billy Ray Cyrus’ Concerts
Underwear janitor sounds like a more official title for what Miley used to do at her dad’s concerts. She was the designated collector of bras and underwear thrown at the Achy Breaky Heart performer on stage, for which she was reportedly paid $10.
Fans were quick to slam Billy Ray when the story first went viral in 2020. “Father of the year material over there..really turned out great for both of them,” a Reddit user sarcastically said at that time. Another one even shared another anecdote of the country singer putting a 2-year-old Miley in danger.
“Another example of his excellent parenting skills,” they wrote, “in case anyone missed it, on Joe Rogan’s podcast she [Miley] said Billy Ray road a dirt bike with her strapped to him when she was 2, and he ducked under a tree branch but she of course couldn’t. The head injury still affects her to this day.”
“I had a head injury when I was 2 years old,” Miley shared in the said podcast, noting that her dad was really “wrong” for that. “It’s bad. My dad had me — this is really his is really bad, but he can’t go to jail, I don’t think, because it’s a long enough time away.”
She continued: “He had me in a baby backpack and I was on a dirt bike with my dad. And he was riding, and a tree had fallen, and he ducked, and I didn’t, and I hit my head on the tree. It was bad. So that’s what’’ wrong. Everyone’s asked me that for years.”
Did Billy Ray Cyrus Like Being On Hannah Montana?
In 2011, Billy Ray told GQ that Hannah Montana “destroyed” their family amid Miley’s scandals at that time. “Oh, it’s huge—it destroyed my family. I’ll tell you right now—the damn show destroyed my family,” he said of the Disney series. “And I sit there and go, ‘Yeah, you know what? Some gave all.'”
He continued: “It is my motto, and guess what? I have to eat that one. I some-gave-all’d it all right. I some-gave-all’d it while everybody else was going to the bank. It’s all sad.” When asked if he wished they didn’t do Hannah Montana at all, he said, “yes,” he’d “take it back in a second.”
“For my family to be here and just be everybody okay, safe and sound and happy and normal, would have been fantastic,” he explained. “Heck, yeah. I’d erase it all in a second if I could.” However, he also admitted that he also did “some stupid crap” as a teen but that it’s still different watching Miley go through it.
“You know what, there’s no doubt I did stuff when I was a teenager that I’m sure could have turned out horribly,” he confessed. “I’ve done some stupid crap—I do stupid crap. We all do. But it’s different when you sit back and you see it happening to your little girl. I feel like I got to try. It’s my daughter. And some of these handlers are perhaps more interested in handling Miley’s money than her safety and her career.”
Is Miley Cyrus Feuding With Her Dad Billy Ray Cyrus?
In the last decade, it seemed like Miley and Billy Ray were on bad terms. But recently, the young Cyrus said her dad should have been a bigger star. “My dad grew up the opposite of me, so I think that’s where me and my dad’s relationship to fame and success is wildly different,” she said in an episode of Endless Summer Vacation Backyard Sessions.
“Him feeling loved by a big audience impacted him emotionally more than it ever could me,” she added. “When he feels special or important it’s like healing a childhood wound and I’ve always been made to feel like a star. It makes me emotional. I will say that I feel vocally my dad was under-appreciated.”
The two became estranged following Billy Ray’s divorce from Miley’s mom, Tish who’s now married to Prison Break alum Dominic Purcell. Sources also said that Miley wasn’t happy about her dad getting engaged to Firerose, whose real name is Johanna Rosie Hodges.
Firerose is only four years older than the Wrecking Ball songstress. Miley and Billy Ray unfollowed each other on Instagram following the news of his engagement in August 2022.
