Rumors swirled about a potential performance, with speculation reaching a fever pitch: “a couple of songs, but with the boys, you never know” (yes, they were affectionately referred to as “the boys”). The setting was Racket, a Chelsea venue formerly known as the High Line, triggering nostalgic murmurs among seasoned New York music enthusiasts.

An hour before the much-anticipated 8 p.m. kick-off, the scene was set with a convoy of sound trucks, barriers, and a formidable security presence along West 16th and 17th streets, confirming that this was more than just a casual “party.”

The spectacle that ensued was nothing short of monumental. Opening with their iconic 1978 New York City anthem “Shattered,” the Stones unleashed a barrage of tracks from the new album, weaving in a pulsating rendition of “Tumblin’ Dice” and concluding the main set with the timeless “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The grand finale? A surprise appearance by none other than Lady Gaga.

Bedazzled in towering platform heels and a sparkling, half-maroon, half-black bellbottomed jumpsuit, Lady Gaga joined forces with the legendary group for “Sweet Sound of Heaven,” the penultimate track on “Hackney Diamonds.” A moment that, while bordering on grandiosity on the album, took on a whole new dimension as Gaga and Jagger engaged in a charismatic duet, exchanging smiles and playful encouragement. As the musicians gracefully exited the stage, Stones guitarist Keith Richards offered Lady Gaga an enthusiastic thumbs-up.

The star-studded audience included luminaries such as Daniel Craig, Mary Kate Olsen, Chris Rock, Jimmy Fallon, Trevor Noah, Taylor Hill, Rachel Weisz, Christie Brinkley, Ed Burns, Keegan-Michael Key, Minka Kelly, Christy Turlington, “Hackney Diamonds” producer Andrew Watt, and more. Elvis Costello and Diana Krall held court in the balcony’s prime viewing position, while Questlove expertly curated the musical atmosphere both before and after the performance.

Mick Jagger, acknowledging the significance of the moment, referenced the show as the latest in a storied history of sensational New York unveilings by the Stones. From playing on a flatbed truck down Fifth Avenue in 1975 to cruising across the Brooklyn Bridge in 2004, this night not only marked the album’s launch, which occurred a mere 90 minutes after the band exited the stage but also hinted at the possibility of another exhilarating tour.
