The “What Was I Made For?” singer shared in November that she’s attracted to women
Billie Eilish is revealing more about comments she made in a recent magazine interview.
The pop superstar, 21, caught up with Variety at the publication’s annual Hitmakers Brunch event Saturday, where she discussed having said that she is “attracted to” women in the magazine’s Power of Women issue last month.
“No I didn’t,” Eilish said when asked by Variety if she had intended to come out in the article. “But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’… I didn’t realize people didn’t know.”
“I just don’t really believe in it,” she added of the concept of coming out. “I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it. Whoops.”
Eilish also revealed her reaction to her words being published: “I saw the article and I was like, oh… I guess… I came out today!” she explained.
“…OK cool,” the Grammy winner added. “But it’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know… but it’s cool that they know.”
She then noted, “Ooh, I’m nervous talking about it!” before concluding, “But… I am for the girls.”
As previously reported, the “What Was I Made For?” singer spoke about her attraction toward women in Variety’s The Power of Women issue, as well as discussing a sense she had that other women don’t like her. “I never really felt like I could relate to girls very well,” she said.
“I love [women] so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real,” Eilish added.
“I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life. I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence,” she continued.
During Variety’s Power of Women event last month, the singer-songwriter spoke about how she was “proud” of her womanhood during an emotional acceptance speech, despite having “spent a lot of my life not feeling like I fit in to being a woman.”
“I think for a couple years because of that insecurity, I became almost very ‘pick me’ about it, and I would be like, ‘Oh, I’m not like other girls because I don’t do this and this,” she said. “I’ve grown to be very resentful of that period of time because I’m so much more interested in being like other girls because other girls are f—ing tight, and I love women.”
“This sounds kind of f—ed up, but I have a lot of internalized misogyny inside of me and I find it coming out in places I don’t want it to,” Eilish continued. “And I have to say, with full transparency, I feel very grateful to be a woman right now. I feel very proud, and I feel very honored to be here.”
It’s been a major year of career achievements for Eilish, who outside of earning her latest honors from Variety, has secured six total Grammy nominations for the 2024 ceremony. The nods, announced last month, have made her one of the 12 most-nominated acts this year, during a calendar year where she did not release a studio album.
For the upcoming 66th annual awards ceremony, Eilish is up for record of the year, song of the year, best pop solo performance, best song written for visual media and best music video for “What Was I Made For?” from the Barbie soundtrack.
She also secured a nomination for best pop duo/group performance for her feature on Labrinth’s track “Never Felt So Alone.”
The Grammy Awards will take place at the Crypto.com arena in Los Angeles on Feb. 4.
