Yes, Billie Eilish is queer — but honestly, she expected you to pick up on that already.
The “What Was I Made For?” singer recently opened up about her sexuality in a Variety cover story, sharing that she’s attracted to women. However, as Eilish explained on the red carpet for Variety’s 2023 Hitmakers event on Saturday, December 2, she didn’t expect her casual comments to make headlines.
“I didn’t [mean to come out in the story],” she told the outlet. “But I kind of thought, ‘Wasn’t it obvious?’ I didn’t realize people didn’t know. I just don’t really believe in it [coming out]. I’m just like, ‘Why can’t we just exist?’ I’ve been doing this for a long time, and I just didn’t talk about it.”
“But I saw the article, and I was like, ‘Oh, I guess I came out today,’” Eilish added. “Okay, cool. It’s exciting to me because I guess people didn’t know, but it’s cool that they know. I am for the girls.”

During her aforementioned Variety cover story interview, the Grammy winner reflected upon growing up with the concern that other women didn’t like her.
“I’ve never felt like I could relate to girls very well,” Eilish said at the time. “I love them so much I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real. I have deep connections with women in my life, the friends in my life, the family in my life. I’m physically attracted to them. But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.”
But just because Eilish’s casual remarks about her sexuality are out in the world doesn’t mean she wants the details of her private life to be the main subject of public conversation. After winning the Film Song of the Year trophy at the Hitmakers event, the musician took to Instagram to issue a very simple directive: “Leave me alone.”
“thanks variety for my award and for also outing me on a red carpet at 11 am instead of talking about anything else that matters,” she captioned the post. “i like boys and girls leave me alone about it please literally who cares stream ‘what was i made for’.”
At the time of writing, Variety has not responded to Eilish’s statement.
