Angel Reese

On the heels of quarterback Jayden Daniels bringing a Heisman Trophy to LSU for only the third time in the school’s history, another of the biggest stars in Baton Rouge has earned a top accolade.

Basketball standout Angel Reese has been named Athlete of the Year by Sporting News, according to LSU Athletics.

Reese shares the honor with fellow hoops star Caitlin Clark of Iowa, becoming only the second and third women in history to receive the title from one of America’s sports publications.

Reese’s star rose rapidly in 2023 as she helped lead the Tigers to their first ever national championship in women’s basketball, making an immediate impact upon her transfer from Maryland.

“She began her journey at LSU with double-doubles in LSU’s first 23 games,” LSU Athletics said of Reese in a press release. “That set an LSU record for consecutive double-doubles and an SEC record for consecutive double-doubles to begin a season. A physical scorer and dominant rebounder, Reese went on to finish the season with an NCAA record 24 double-doubles as she averaged 23.0 points and 15.4 rebounds per game.”

Reese is also one of the nation’s top earning women in terms of NIL at the collegiate level and appeared in the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue last spring, one of the first college athletes to do so, alongside fellow LSU athlete Olivia Dunne.
