The singerwho was named the 2023 Person of the Year by ‘Time,’ also said she gave up alcohol in the months leading up to her tour
Taylor Swift is revealing how she got in shape for the Eras Tour.
In an interview with Time in honor of Swift being named Person of the Year by the outlet, the singer-songwriter, 33, explained that she began training for her concert six months before opening night in March at State Farm Stadium in Glendale, Arizona.
“I knew this tour was harder than anything I’d ever done before by a long shot,” Swift told Time. “I finally, for the very first time, physically prepared correctly.”
Going into further detail, Swift said part of her training included running on the treadmill every day while singing the concert’s expansive setlist. ”Fast for fast songs, and a jog or a fast walk for slow songs,” she said. After running she’d also strength train at her gym, Dogpound, and take dance classes.
She added: “I wanted to get it in my bones. I wanted to be so over-rehearsed that I could be silly with the fans, and not lose my train of thought. Learning choreography is not my strong suit.”
Swift also said she stopped drinking alcohol in preparation for her three-hour and 15-minute show. The only night she drank leading up to her tour’s kickoff was during the Grammy Awards in February. “I gave myself a fun night for that one,” she said. Then, she was back to abstaining.
“Doing that show with a hangover,” she continued, “I don’t want to know that world.”
“I know I’m not drinking on tour. I know I’m working out in between shows. I know I’m keeping my strength and stamina up. I know I’m going on that stage whether I’m sick, injured, heartbroken, uncomfortable, or stressed,” she said. “That’s part of my identity as a human being now. If someone buys a ticket to my show, I’m going to play it unless we have some sort of force majeure.”
Once the Eras Tour began in March, Swift would perform three back-to-back shows in each city. She shared with the outlet that on off days – which she called “dead days” – she wouldn’t do anything except get out of bed to get food.
She said: “It’s a dream scenario. I can barely speak because I’ve been singing for three shows straight. Every time I take a step my feet go crunch, crunch, crunch from dancing in heels. But it’s the most fulfilled I’ve ever felt.”
