"I want nothing to do with this": Aquaman Star Jason Momoa Had His Fears Before Working in $6.6 Billion Fast and Furious Franchise

Jason Momoa is no stranger to drama on the set among cast and crew. Being as popular as he is, and having years of experience working with big names, both artists and franchises, it is safe to say that he has had to deal with a lot of tension on the set. However, in a recent interview, the Game of Thrones star opened up about how he was wary of joining the hugely successful $6.6 billion Fast and Furious franchise.

Fans of the franchise are aware of the constant conflicts that have been brewing among the cast since the first movie. In fact, the reason behind Dwayne Johnson’s abrupt departure from the franchise after years of acting as agent Hobbs was the long-standing intense conflict between him and Vin Diesel becoming public after 2019’s Hobbs and Shaw. As a result, Jason Momoa revealed his reservations about joining the Fast X cast.

Jason Momoa’s reservations about the Fast and Furious drama

As mentioned before, Jason Momoa is no stranger to drama on the set. He mentioned that is one of the reasons why he had doubts about joining the franchise before. According to him, he did not want any more situations where he had to have a front-row seat to any upsetting circumstances during working. Especially with his up-and-close experience with the upcoming Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom co-star Amber Heard, who has been in the public eye for years regarding her legal battle with ex-husband Johnny Depp. Spit is understandable why Momoa would think so.

His worries worsened when seemingly confirming his fears, the original director of the franchise, Justin Lin left it altogether after only seven days of work. As he mentions, “I was expecting there to be a lot of – I mean, to be completely honest – drama, and you’re like, ‘I want nothing to do with this.’” However, fortunately for him, he did not have to deal with any such circumstances even with an all-star cast featuring big names like John Cena and Brie Larson. In his interview with Total Films, he repeatedly mentions how supportive everyone was among the cast and crew.

Momoa noted his surprise at how Vin Diesel immediately befriended him and how welcoming everyone was. According to him,

“It was amazing. Everyone was so supportive. I had a ball with Vin. I was just shocked at how cool everyone was. No one was jaded; everyone was just really, really happy to be there.”

This, in turn, made him happy to be there. He also added how Louise Leterrier, the director of The Incredible Hulk, who came in to save the movie after Justin Lin left, allowed him to go as far as he wanted to take his character.

Momoa mentions how his ultimate goal for his role as Dante, the main villain for Fast X, was to “make it where you’re gonna want to kill [him].” As a result, with a character with no moral compass, he especially appreciated the director’s input, as according to him,

“There was no holding me back. Normally, a director will say ‘Don’t do that.’ But Louis was like, ‘Do more!’ He was really fun that way.”

After continuous social media posts from the stars showing their camaraderie and support for each other, it will be interesting to see where the franchise takes the fans as the end looms closer. Nonetheless, it is safe to say that fans of Jason Momoa and the Fast and Furious franchise both are eagerly waiting to see what is there in store for them in this new direction.
