Top 5 Lowest Grossing Fast and Furious Movie: The Biggest Box Office Flop in Fast and Furious Franchise is Barely Surprising

The Fast and Furious franchise has become one of the highest-grossing franchises in Hollywood. Now, after pulling billions at the box office, this iconic franchise has finally started its journey to the finish line with Fast X‘s release a couple of days ago.

And interestingly, during its premiere at Cannes, Vin Diesel announced that this cult favorite franchise will feature not just one but three entire movies as its final trilogy.

Not only that, but this movie also features the franchise’s once-veteran Dwyane Johnson, who left it in a rush following constant clashes with Vin Diesel.

Although he only featured in a short cameo in a credit scene, fans are expecting him to play a bigger role in the following movies which are already claimed to be in production. As a result, the movie is doing well and good for now with a massive opening weekend.

And so, it seems fitting to take a look back at the lowest-grossing movies to remember how far they have come as the franchise speeds toward the finish line furiously.

5. Fast Five ($630.2M)

Fast Five introduced Dwayne Johnson as agent Luke Hobbs to the audience. With Paul Walker’s Brian O’Connor, Jordana Brewster’s Mia Torreto, and Vin Diesel’s Dom Torreto on the run, they become desperate to gain freedom. And when that opportunity arrives as a high-risk job, complications arise with Hobbs hot on their trails.

This movie is also a special mention as the finale trilogy starting with Fast X, has a direct connection to this one. The final villain aka Jason Momoa‘s Dante is the son of one of the people the Furious trio ended up killing to save themselves in Fast Five and started a terrible domino effect.

However, although this gained pretty good reviews from both critics and the audience, its box office collection did not exactly match the hype. Gaining only $210 million at the domestic box office and $630 million worldwide, Fast Five stands at the fifth place of the franchise’s lowest-grossing movies ever.

4. Fast and Furious ($359.3M)

The fourth movie of the franchise, Fast and Furious, brought the audience Dom Torreto and Brian O’Connor teaming up as not only racers but an investigation duo as they try to get to the bottom of the murder of one of the former’s loved ones.

Although the movie had quite the riveting plot to impress the audience, when it came down to it, it ended up pulling only $155 million at the domestic box office and a total of $359.3 million worldwide.

3. 2 Fast 2 Furious ($236.4M)

The second movie of the franchise brought Paul Walker‘s Brian O’Connor to the forefront with the cop entering the street racing circle in Miami. However, trouble brewed when he had to cut a deal with the FBI to take down a drug lord following unprecedented complications in the street racing scene.

Although this movie happens to be one of the fan favorites even with some negative reviews from critics, it bombed at the box office. Earning only $127 million domestically and a total of $236.4 million worldwide, it stands in third place.

2. The Fast and The Furious (206.5M)

The introductory movie of the franchise which first brought Paul Walker and Vin Diesel duo to the world, happens to be one of the lowest-grossing movies in the entire franchise. This movie first gave birth to the iconic Brian O’Connor and Dominic Torreto duo that will become a legacy of its own with the following movies.

However, conflicts arose between them with the reveal of O’Connor being an undercover cop. The conflict ended up reaching the box office as well with the movie making only $144 million domestically and a total of $206.5 million once the worldwide count finished.

1. The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift ($157.8M)

Taking the first place on this list though, is unsurprisingly, the third movie of the franchise, The Fast and The Furious: Tokyo Drift. The movie follows Sean who starts getting into legal trouble because of his street racing hobby.

When things take a bad turn, he moves to Japan to live with his father. However, trouble soon follows him in the form of the Yakuza as even a continent apart, his love for street racing keeps tempting him.

The movie not only stands to be one of the least favorite in the franchise but it bombed completely at the box office. Earning only $62 million in the home ground, with a production budget of $85 million, it ended its run at $157.8 million worldwide.

Although there have been quite a few movies in the Fast and Furious franchise that completely bombed at the theaters, the overwhelming success of The Fate of the Furious ($1.24B) and Furious 7 ($1.51B), has taken the sting out of that.

And now Fast X, too, is off to a great start, with an opening of $319 million worldwide. Fans predict if things go well, it might even leave Furious 7‘s success in the dust.

Fast X is currently available at theaters worldwide.
