Katy Perry pulled off a show-stopping turn as the host of the MTV Europe Music Awards last night, as she dazzled in 12 different outfits.

In a bid to go one better than last year, when she had 10 costume changes at the same bash, the American singer made sure she was the fashion queen at the star-studded event in Berlin.

While starting the night off demurely in a floor-length pink Marchesa gown, Katy went on to flaunt her curves in a series of skimpy outfits on stage.

And in a cheeky tribute to new boyfriend Russell Brand, she wore a bespoke burlesque West Ham (his favourite team) lingerie set of basque and knickers, with an Irons badge on each breast and his nickname ‘Rusty’ written across her derrière.

Clearly thrilled with theperformance by his girlfriend of seven weeks, he wrote on his Twitter micro-blogging page: ‘Wow. Now MY GIRLFRIEND has worn a West Ham basque while hosting the EMAs. What a day!I might revive Gandhi and ask if he wants to be mates.

Yes I will be taking her to a game – West Ham Vs Everton. And, before it begins, no I won’t be taking her up the Arsenal.’

Katy told Mail Online on the red carpet that it had taken her a while to perfect her look.

‘I spent a lot of time working out every single detail, just making sure every look was perfect.’

The singer took to the stage in a ringmaster style basque, suspenders and panties with a heart on the front before performing a burlesque style routine with a troupe of dancers.

Taking their cue from Liza Minelli’s Cabaret, the dancers performed a medley of hits including DJ David Guetta’s When Love Takes Over, Kings Of Leon’s Sex On Fire, Beyonce’s Halo and Lady Gaga’s Pokerface in Katy’s very own Kitty Kat Club.

‘I’m just doing my thing my own way, it’s meant to be fun, not meant to be taken too seriously,’ she said before the show.

However she was tight-lipped on her budding romance with comic Russell Brand preferring to keep the focus on the night’s events.

‘The girls are taking it to a magical level this year, Leona and Beyonce and Shakira. To come out now you have to be really fierce to be really in with a chance.’

The singer also revealed that she was so taken with Beyonce’s hit Single Ladies that she sought out producers The Dream and Tricky and will soon be in the studio with them.

‘I’d like to produce something as catchy as Single Ladies, that everybody wants to sing, but in my own rock and roll way.’

Throughout the show, Katy went through a variety of costume changes, with most of her outfits leaning towards the burlesque theme.

For one presenting segment, Katy looked ready for bed as she sat in a giant champagne glass – in the style of Dita Von Teese – in a fluffy pink marabou cardigan over a black satin bra.

Before the ceremony, Katy promised she would be scantily-clad on stage: ‘I’m going to highlight what God gave me – what my momma made – with lots of booby things. There will be a lot of costumes but fewer clothes.’

During rehearsals earlier in the week, Katy posted a picture of her dressing room online on her Twitter page and promised ‘feathers and lace and garters… on my. A whole dressing room of naughty gorgeous lil’ outfits.’

Katy wasn’t the only star with numerous costume changes – R&B star Beyonce showed off four different looks.

She started the evening off in a shimmering Atelier Versace pink number but later changed into a David Koma dress remarkably similar to X Factor judge Cheryl Cole’s heavily-criticised black outfit which she wore on the ITV show at the weekend.

British singer Joss Stone looked sleek and highly groomed in a blue print mini-dress by Blue Halo, and over the knee black suede boots by designer Valentino, while Leona Lewis went for a laid back look with luxe sequinned harem pants from designer Vivienne Westwood, and a matching corset which showed off her tiny waist.

Clearly over the recent trauma of being attacked by a crazed fan during a book signing, the Bleeding Love singer said she was looking forward to performing in Berlin.

‘It’s amazing to be on stage with Beyonce, I’ve worked with her before, and also Shakira and the other great artists here tonight.’

And she offered her thoughts on the ‘Jedward’ phenomenon, cautiously saying: ‘They’re trying their best, they’re young guys and they’re having fun.

‘But I personally don’t think they will win. They may go far in the competition but I don’t think they will win it.’

Green Day, dressed in black, opened the ceremony with a raucous performance of their song Know Your Enemy, getting the crowd clapping above their heads.

Pop star Pixie Lott looked sleek as she arrived in a black ruffled Dolce and Gabbana mini-dress and extremely high heeled shoes from the designers.

The event is one of the music world’s most glitzy bashes and was being held in Berlin this year to mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, a potent Cold War symbol.

The ceremony, watched in more than 500 million homes worldwide, tends to be dominated by acts from the United States, despite being a Europe-based event.

During the nominations for Best Urban Act, Katy turned the tables on rapper Kanye West. In a parody of the infamous Taylor Swift incident – she interrupted his nomination video to say she had one of the best nomination interruptions of all time.

The award went to Jay-Z. He said: ‘I go to the studio just like the Jonas Brothers, just like Green Day, and we’re all just artists at the end of the day.’
