Avril Lavigne can sing some damn country music.
At the ACM Honors event, which just aired this week, she covered the hell out of her fellow Canadian Shania Twain’s hit “No One Needs to Know.”
Shania was presented with the ACM Poets Award, which Avril explained:
“Honors a songwriter who has had a huge impact on country music. Shania Twain redefined what a female artist could be. She showed there were no limits to songwriting, talent or vision. And looks what happens: global domination.
For every artist who’s come after her, she’s the inspiration to work harder and keep pushing the boundaries.”
Amen to that…
“No One Needs to Know” was co-written by Shania and her ex-husband and former producer Robert “Mutt” Lange.
It was the sixth single from her 1995 The Woman in Me album, and became Shania’s third consecutive number-one hit on country radio, and fourth overall, when it peaked at the top spot of U.S. Billboard Hot Country Songs chart in 1996.
Shania also graciously accepted the award, giving a speech and saying in part:“It’s so nice to just look around, and Kelsea, first of all, thanks for kicking off, right, the show with ‘Man! I Feel Like A Woman!’
That’s the song that definitely made a lot of waves in the country music industry, I know. Tiera, thank you so much for singing ‘From This Moment On,’ it’s one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written, and I think you did a beautiful job.
Avril, you are just plain old kickass. You should’ve gone into country music, honestly.”
And after seeing her performance of this hit Shania song, I couldn’t agree more…
Avril completely crushed it, and I also very much appreciate her nod to Shania’s iconic leopard outfit from her “That Don’t Impress Me Much” music video… she gets it:
