A new fan-made trailer casts Spider-Man franchise star Tom Holland in Back to the Future 4, which includes an interesting synopsis.

While the possibility of Back to the Future 4 remains on the back burner, a fan of the titular sci-fi film franchise crafts an intriguing trailer of what the sequel could look like, with Spider-Man franchise star Tom Holland as a key cast member.

Via YouTube, KH Studio released an edit of what a potential Back to the Future 4 would look like, featuring the film series’ original stars, Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd as Marty McFly and Doc Brown respectively. Additionally, it features Holland as Jake McFly, the son of Marty and Jennifer McFly (Elizabeth Shue). The edit combines footage from Fox’s 2019 Netflix sci-fi/adventure flick, See You Yesterday, and a LEGO Dimensions promo, seeing Holland’s character roam the streets as he’s amazed by flying cars and other nuances he sees as he navigates different timelines.

A full-fledged synopsis for the proposed movie accompanies the fanmade Back to the Future 4 trailer. It reads, “Tom Holland takes on the role of a brilliant young inventor, Jake McFly, who stumbles upon Doc Brown’s long-lost journal. The journal contains secrets to enhance time travel capabilities, opening up new possibilities and unforeseen consequences. As Jake navigates through various timelines, he encounters both familiar faces and new challenges, all while trying to prevent a mysterious adversary from rewriting history.” The trailer already has 1.8 million views at the time of writing since its Dec. 10 release.

Speculation about a potential Back to the Future 4 has been ongoing ever since the eponymous threequel in 1990. Franchise co-creator Bob Gale denounced the possibility of a fourth entry, telling Variety in July, “There’s no need to go back to that well. You’ve seen too many people go back too many times. As I’ve said many times, the characters in Back to the Future are my family, my children. You don’t sell your kids into prostitution.” Additionally, Fox expressed that he isn’t keen on a Back to the Future reboot. The movie trilogy is widely revered, making over $965 million at the box office, with the first film receiving four Academy Award nominations, winning for Best Sound Editing.

Instead of a movie, Back to the Future has been playing out on stage thanks to Back to the Future: The Musical, which debuted at the Manchester Opera House in 2020, one month before the COVID-19 pandemic was declared. The award-winning musical opened via Broadway this past August to rave reviews, with Casey Likes playing Marty.

Holland is best known for playing the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Spider-Man, having appeared in multiple Avengers films and three Spider-Man films, including HomecomingFar From Home and No Way Home, with a fourth film reportedly in development. His most recent sci-fi entry was in the 2021 Lionsgate pic, Chaos Walking, alongside Daisy Ridley and Mads Mikkelsen.
