Kristen Stewart Just Brought Back My Favorite Hairstyle from Middle School

I wish I had the Spencer actor’s grown-up take on the double ponytail to reference when I was styling mine in 2003.

Kristen Stewart is the latest star to get into the Y2K revival with her newest hairstyle, done by her longtime stylist Adir Abergel.

Honestly, any time the two come together they create hair magic. Some of their most recent hits include the knotted updo Stewart wore for the Spencer premiere in New York City last November, the messy bun with bangs she sported for an appearance on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert, and a wet-look ponytail at the 2022 Film Independent Spirit Awards earlier this month.

On March 15, the Spencer actor paid a visit to Jimmy Kimmel Live! to discuss the 2021 film and her first-ever Oscar nomination for the role. Of course, we were most interested in the hairstyle she and Abergel chose for the occasion: a classic double ponytail that’s giving us major early 2000s vibes. You know it, you’ve seen it, you’ve probably worn it yourself.

Abergel created this bi-level look by making a horizontal part at the back of Stewart’s head and slicking the top half into a ponytail. The bottom half of her hair is also pulled into a smooth pony, then connected to the ends of the top one. We love this hairstyle because it’s so familiar. It’s a simple way to add interest to the humble ponytail,  and reminds us of our childhoods, too. Don’t lie — we know you rolled through the middle school dance in a Juicy Couture terry tracksuit and a double pony. Maybe yours had a pouf in the front, too.

We might not be blessed with Abergel-level hairstyling skills, but the look is straightforward enough to pull off with some elastics, a little hair spray, a parting comb, and a brush. The sleekness of this look gives it some Hollywood polish, but if you want to go really retro and try it for yourself, maybe consider adding some face-framing tendrils to the mix.

We’re rooting for Stewart to win her first Oscar, especially because we know how good she’ll look doing it. If it wasn’t clear before, it’s evident now that Stewart can pull off any hairstyle she tries, and we hope that there are more Y2K-inspired looks in her future.
