The single-engine Diamond DA-40 crashed on the road at around 8:15 pm, the Federal Aviation Administration told The U.S. Sun.

Two people were on board when it went down, and two people were hospitalized after the crash, according to the Buncombe County Sheriff’s Office.

The aircraft was reporting problems before the landing, but it’s unclear when the fire started, an airport spokesperson told ABC affiliate WLOS.

Reporters at the scene have described the remains of the plane as “unrecognizable,” and said a wing was broken off and flung away from the burning pile.

“It’s hard to imagine how anyone could survive when you look at this damage,” Marc Liverman with WLOS said during a live stream.

But first responders on the scene said the passengers appeared to be in good condition.

“There does not appear to be any life-threatening injuries,” Allen Morgan, Buncombe County on-duty EMS supervisor told the Citizen-Times.

Reporters added there was also a brief power outage that could be attributed to powerlines clipped by the crash.

A fire truck was sent to support Skyland Fire and Rescue, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol and local police at the scene.

The Interstate will be closed indefinitely, according to the North Carolina Department of Transportation.

All traffic is at a standstill and officials are finding alternative routes for drivers.

The cause of the crash is under investigation by the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board.
