Adele has gushed over Taylor Swift and called her ‘one of the greatest songwriters of our generation’ as she showed her support for the singer’s 10th studio album.

The Hello hitmaker, 34, praised Taylor, 32, for her songwriting talents as she spoke at Happy Hour With Adele, a fan event celebrating the release of her music video for I Drink Wine.

When asked at the event if she had listened to Taylor’s new album Midnights, Adele admitted that she hadn’t because she had been busy in 12-hour rehearsals each day.

But she went on to laud the American singer as ‘one of the greatest songwriters of our generation’ as she showed her support for Taylor’s record-breaking songs.

Admitting she hadn’t listened to Midnight yet, Adele said: ‘I haven’t, but the only reason is ’cause I’ve been in rehearsals for, like, 12 hours a f**king day, I’m sick and tired of anything musical.

‘But I think Taylor’s one of the greatest songwriters of our generation, so I will definitely give it a listen. I loved the two in Covid very, very much, and I think she’s fun, she makes a release fun!’

Her comments come as Taylor’s new album became the first album in Nielsen history to sell more than 500,000 copies in its first week.

The singer-songwriter released Midnights on October 21, and Billboard reported the album has already become a record-breaker.

Billboard also cited statistics from the music data company Luminate, which claims that Swift sold the equivalent of 1.4million album units in its first five days.

Midnights’ 1.4 million equivalent units sold is the most an album has sold in its debut week since Adele’s 25 came out in 2015. 25 sold 3.482 million equivalent records in its first week in 2015.

There are 20 songs on Midnights’ deluxe edition, which have been streamed 423 million on-demand streams. That counts both audio and video streams.

The streaming totals account for the fifth-most all-time, with the most streams in one week coming from Drake’s Scopion.

News of Taylor’s vinyl totals came on the same day as the video of one of her songs was edited to remove a controversial image.

Her music video for new single Anti-Hero has been edited to remove a controversial scene showing her stepping onto a bathroom scale which reads ‘fat’.

The clip on Apple Music, which premiered on October 21, no longer shows a close-up of the scale, with the 32-year old singer simply seen looking at her clone with a shocked expression as she stands in the bathroom.

The decision to remove the scene comes after fans took to social media to brand the singer ‘fatphobic’ for ‘perpetuating that being overweight is bad’.

Others slammed the decision to remove the scene, citing Taylor’s bravery in addressing body image after she had spoken openly about her own past battle with an eating disorder.

In the five-minute long video, singer doesn’t hold back exploring the themes of ‘self-hatred’, depicting herself as two separate entities, one who she sees as her own worst enemy and one that is too afraid to let loose and have fun.
