Kandovan, a fascinating ancient village located in the East Azerbaijan province near Tabriz, Iran, is truly a sight to behold.
This unique village has been in existence for at least 800 years and is home to 670 residents. Its breathtaking scenery makes it a popular destination for travelers seeking a one-of-a-kind experience.
The village of Kandovan is renowned for its unique homes carved into rocks, some of which are over 700 years old. It is believed that this village was formed in part by the remains of volcanic activity from a strong Mount Sahand eruption that took place several hundred years ago.
In the short clip below, you’ll notice that this is a unique place where homes are not constructed on a mountain but rather inside of it. One fascinating aspect is that the rock serves as an energy-efficient material, maintaining a cool temperature in the summer and a warm ambiance during winter. This is why the majority of local residents here do not require heating or air conditioning systems.
The captivating architecture of this village appears to defy all conventional rules, and visitors are typically entranced by its incredible slopes and unconventional paths. Recently, a hotel was constructed that drew inspiration from and was connected to the “style” of the village. The “Rocky Hotel” boasts stunning cave interiors with highly comfortable living spaces. What we found particularly fascinating is that it takes four people ten months to dig a single room. Check out the video to witness the unique appearance of these rooms.
