Shakira must pay a million-dollar fine to Spanish authorities, but it’s not stopping her from enjoying a shopping spree.

Shakira could be on the hook for millions as she’s facing various charges in Spain for tax fraud. But that isn’t stopping the singer for dropping big money, including during a recent shopping excursion at Art Basel in Miami.

Shakira Was Buying Expensive Artwork After Being Fined For Millions

At one point, Shakira was looking closely at a 2023 piece by Mickalene Thomas called “High Priestess.” She even seemed to record a video of the art work as she contemplated whether to add it to her personal collection.

However, as per Page Six, the piece was already sold by the time Shakira spotted it. It went for a high price at $500,000. A gallery employee was then seen showing Shakira other works by Thomas in hopes she’d fall for something similar to the already-sold piece.

Shakira’s recent shopping spree may be her way of celebrating the tax fraud case she settled with Spanish authorities, even though she’s been ordered to pay millions.

Specifically, Shakira was given a three-year suspended sentence in addition toa $7.6 million fine. The pop star’s overall net worth is estimated to be $300 million.

Though Shakira maintained her innocence after charges were brought forth, the musician released a statement explaining why she chose to settle in the end, noting her two sons were her biggest motivating factor.

“I have made the decision to finally resolve this matter with the best interest of my kids at heart who do not want to see their mom sacrifice her personal well-being in this fight,” Shakira said.

Shakira Narrowly Avoided Jail Time In Spanish Tax Fraud Case

Though Shakira will have to fork over seven figures to the Spanish government, there was a time when she was reportedly facing an even bigger fine, so it’s possible she could see the $7 million settlement as a victory.

In September 2022, when she was ordered to stand trial on tax fraud charges, it was reported that Shakira could be facing jail time in addition to a fine worth up to $26 million. The charges were filed after Shakira allegedly avoided paying €14.5 million ($14 million USD) in taxes between 2012 and 2014.

Shakira denied the claims shortly after, even insinuating the Spanish government was pursuing the case mainly because she’s a high-profile celebrity.

I’ve paid everything they claimed I owed, even before they filed a lawsuit. So as of today, I owe zero to them,” the singer told Elle.

“It is well known that the Spanish tax authorities do this often not only with celebrities like me (or [Cristiano] Ronaldo, Neymar, [Xabi] Alonso, and many more),” Shakira continued. “It also happens unjustly to the regular taxpayer. It’s just their style.”

“But I’m confident that I have enough proof to support my case and that justice will prevail in my favor,” the mother-of-two added.

Shakira may have felt as though she’s innocent, but she did end up having to pay in the end, even if the fine pales in comparison to her personal fortune.
