Beyoncé is showing her hometown community some support.

The music icon, 42, and her mother, Tina Knowles-Lawson, made an appearance Friday at a kickoff celebration for the forthcoming Knowles-Rowland House — a structure being redeveloped for permanent supportive housing for about 31 locals in Houston, Texas.

The Knowles-Rowland House, formerly the Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth, was built in 1999 but burned in a March 2021 fire. It was initially funded by Beyoncé and her Destiny’s Child bandmate Kelly Rowland, but will now see new life as a housing development for homeless and vulnerable Houstonians, and as a place where they can find additional support, per Houston Public Media.

The project is being fronted by Bread of Life, Inc., a local nonprofit.

On Friday, Beyoncé and her mom showed their support for the redevelopment plans, which local station KPRC-TV noted is an $8 million project.

“That was exciting for all of us,” Bread of Life’s director of partnerships and development Monique Williams told Houston Public Media of Beyoncé’s support. “She’s a busy lady. She’s doing a couple of other things this weekend. For her to pause and just kind of return home and to be in this space with us and to hear again what more will be done and to see her legacy, I think it was wonderful for everyone to be in that space and share that with her.”

At the event, Beyoncé wore a snakeskin romper and a cowboy hat, while Knowles-Lawson, 69, opted for a white blazer and matching pants.

Previously in July, Harris County Commissioners Court authorized $7.2 million in American Rescue Plan Act funding to assist with the reconstruction, with Bread of Life set to raise the remainder, according to Houston Public Media.

The location is reportedly expected to open before the end of 2024.

“This project will move Harris County closer to realizing its vision for a vibrant, inclusive region where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and a place to call home,” Harris County Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis said, according to the outlet.

“Access to safe and affordable housing is a fundamental human right and a need that cannot be addressed without increasing and preserving our affordable housing stock,” he continued.

Williams added: “Whoever expects Beyoncé to be anywhere? Everything’s always a surprise. I think it was wonderful for everybody to be able to really kind of see her commitment to our work.”
