Beyonce has given us another gift in the form of a new video from her Lemonade album on her 35th birthday. The album is known for its striking visuals and unique sound, and the video for “Hold Up” is no exception. This Yeah Yeah Yeahs-inspired track was released quietly on September 4th and follows the success of “Sorry,” which was the first single to come out after Beyonce’s hit “Formation.” If you haven’t yet experienced Lemonade or seen Beyonce’s incredible 15-minute performance at the VMAs, then you’re definitely missing out.
Beyoncé surprised her fans last Saturday by releasing “Lemonade,” a visual album that paired an 18-track record with an hour-long video, revealing her uncharacteristically personal side. Despite not giving an interview in two years, Beyoncé’s latest release addresses the issue of infidelity in her marriage to Jay Z, who had cheated on her. The second scene of “Lemonade” depicts Beyoncé, dressed in a voluptuous yellow dress, smashing American muscle cars with a Louisville Slugger named “Hot Sauce,” symbolizing the scorned woman’s revenge. Beyond being an artistic and commercial project, “Lemonade” is a political statement, a love letter to black women, a document of oppression, and a flaming baseball bat on the lawn of patriarchy, illustrating the particular role women unwillingly inhabit in many relationships. The chosen automotive victims in the video have cultural significance, representing the cars that boyfriends wrench on during their weekends off or bring home after bonuses. Beyoncé assigned all that to the past and redefined the jilted wife role, lending characteristic swagger and beauty to a position that leaves so many in a wan, devastated heap.
