“Probably 10 years ago, Noah and I tried to work on something else together. We kind of developed for a little bit, and then it didn’t end up being right, and by the time it was ready to shoot, I was kind of past it. It wasn’t the right fit…you feel like maybe something didn’t work out professionally and you’re like: ‘Well, there goes that relationship.’”

Sharing the incident that almost toppled their friendship, Scarlett Johansson mentioned she was thus shocked to get a call from Noah Baumbach, years later for Marriage Story.

“I was so surprised when he called me years later to meet and talk about something. It totally came out of the blue. I met with him in New York, and it was like no time had passed at all. We kind of shifted right into this moment where he pitched me this story a little bit, and I myself was actually in the middle of going through a divorce. It was such a strange coincidence.”

Apart from being happy to revive her friendship and professional relationship with Noah Baumbach, Scarlett Johansson also found a resemblance between the movie’s storyline and her personal life. Discussing how the similarities were uncanny, Johansson thus admitted accepting the project without thinking twice.
