In the wake of the release of her memoir, Worthy, Jada Pinkett Smith is opening up about several aspects of her life, from her struggles in Hollywood to her relationship with her husband, Will Smith. In one of her recent interviews, the actress revealed that they have been separated for seven years but have no plans to divorce. However, things always weren’t like this in their relationship, as The Matrix star recently revealed that her husband tried for years before they eventually got together.

Jada Pinkett Smith Says Will Smith Tried For Years to Get Together

During a recent interview with People, Jada Pinkett Smith revealed how her husband, Will Smith, tried to get together with her for years. The couple first met in 1994 but did not start dating until the following year. Smith was married to Sheree Zampino at the time.

“I’d run into Will a million times, and he really tried it for years,” she said before adding, “I didn’t even recognize that.” The Nutty Professor actress also shared that she received a call from Smith, who told her about his separation from Sheree Zampino and asked her if she was seeing anyone at the time.

“He said, ‘Are you seeing anybody now.’ I’m like, ‘No.’ He’s like good you seeing me,” Pinkett Smith recalled during the interview. The actress shared that although she was surprised by the sudden confession, she was also impressed by his direct and confident approach.

“[I] had to clutch my pearls. I was like, you know, that kind of assertiveness can be a little s*xy,” she said. The actress reached out to the Men in Black star once she returned to Los Angeles, and they officially started seeing each other. Smith divorced Sheree Zampino in 1995 and married Jada Pinkett Smith in 1997.

Jada Pinkett Smith also talks about the infamous incident at the 2022 Oscars that resulted in a 10-year ban for Will Smith. In a book excerpt released via People, she mentioned that she was initially confused about why her husband was upset with the joke about her alopecia, as they had been living separately.

“Even so, I am unclear on the reason why Will is so upset. We had been living separate lives and were there as family, not as husband and wife.”
During her interview, the actress shared that there were different stages in their marriage where they decided that they were not together. She also said that during that time she was also thinking about their separation. “I was actually thinking about divorcing, separating, I mean there have been several of those,” she said. However, Pinkett Smith has said that they are trying their best to figure out things in their relationship.
