“I saw it, and I threw up”: Angelina Jolie Reveals the 1993 Sci-fi Movie that Helped Her Rise in Hollywood Made Her Sick

Being one of the most recognizable names in Hollywood, Angelina Jolie doesn’t need any introduction. She has held the title of the highest-paid actress in Hollywood on several occasions and has even won numerous accolades for her on-screen work, including an Academy Award and three Golden Globes.

Jolie has worked on a number of notable movies, including Girl, Interrupted, Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, Salt, Maleficent, and of course, Kung Fu-Panda. The mother of six also took over the directing duties for the films: In the Land of Blood and Honey, Unbroken, and First They Killed My Father.

The actress, now 48, was a 17-year-old aspiring Hollywood star in 1993. She seized the opportunity to star in a Jean Claude Van Damme sequel when it was offered to her, despite the fact that the Black Eagle star was absent from this film.

Because of this, the long-forgotten 1993 film served as the official start of Jolie’s career, and she has not looked back since.

But did we mention, she might not have fond memories of her first acting role in this 1993 sci-fi movie? But why?

This Angelina Jolie Film Once Made Her Sick

With roles in box office success like Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Gone in 60 Seconds, Hollywood icon Angelina Jolie has had a long and successful career. But early in her career, she played one of her first roles in a movie she might not remember too fondly. It was primarily because she had a vomiting fit after watching the film.

Known for her Oscar-winning roles and charitable work, Jolie discussed how her breakout performance in the 1993 movie, Cyborg 2 ultimately made her feel so sick. The actress made her feature film debut as Casella ‘Cash’ Reese, which Entertainment Weekly (in 2014) named Jolie’s worst film.

When the 48-year-old actress imagined her first major premiere, it was not the kind of movie she had hoped to honor. She once recalled her initial reaction to seeing her science fiction farce by saying, “Oh, I threw up,” to Buzzfeed. She further insisted:
“I did. I saw it, and I threw up. Just nausea. But the kickboxing was fun. It was the first time I was sent to do kickboxing. But I was 17, and I think I thought I was making a real movie, which is odd, since there’s a scene when I’m decapitated and talking … as one does. But, yeah, I saw it and got really sick. I just remember my brother Jamie [Haven] holding me and saying, ‘It’s going to be all right.’”
For the record, Cyborg 3: The Recycler, the direct sequel to Cyborg 2, was released in 1994.

How Did Angelina Jolie Get Featured In Cyborg 2?

If Angelina Jolie wanted to appear in Cyborg 2, her debut movie, she had to be emancipated. Yes, the film’s director, Michael Shroeder, once spoke to Hollywood Gothic about the hiring procedure for the Maleficent actress.

As a result of Jolie’s age at the time, Shroeder acknowledged that some legal issues needed to be resolved before the Eternals actress could be hired. Nevertheless, the director was interested in working with her because he thought she was a good fit for the part.

The Man in the Chair director further said about Jolie:
“It’s her first movie, but I read probably fifty actresses and model types, and it was really difficult to find somebody who had the cyborg quality but still has some kind of presence, and when this girl came in, I knew she had what it takes.”
But Jolie’s age posed a challenge as the director added:
“Then I found out she’s only seventeen, and we can’t mess around with labor laws and welfare workers and school teachers. I just didn’t have that luxury; I had to shoot, shoot, shoot.”

Thankfully, Jolie’s dad, renowned actor, Jon Voight, had connections as Shroeder recalled:
“He [Jon Voight] knew a judge and made some calls, and we got her emancipated, because she had been living on her own for quite a while. She just needed to file and get a judge to agree to it, so then we could just work, and we didn’t have to give her special treatment.”
Well, you can watch Cyborg 2 and figure out what exactly caused the actress to throw up after watching this film, which is streaming on Tubi TV.
