Before the John Wick: Chapter 4 release, Keanu Reeves in an interview with Wired revealed why he has one special clause that every movie must follow to get him onboard. It states that his performances can’t be manipulated without his permit which was not always a thing.

He mentioned that this clause came into existence after his performance in one of the movies was altered which didn’t seem to fit with The Matrix actor.
“I don’t mind if someone takes a blink out during an edit. But early on, in the early 2000s, or it might have been the ’90s, I had a performance changed. They added a tear to my face, and I was just like, “Huh?!” It was like, I don’t even have to be here. “
While the actor didn’t give much context to which film he was referring in that segment, he addressed the consequences it could bring.

Keanu Reeves’s Take on Deepfake Technology

The edit would have left a deep impact on him which led him to go to these lengths. He expressed his concern as deep-fake technology continues to gain public interest.

He shared,
“What’s frustrating about that is you lose your agency. When you give a performance in a film, you know you’re going to be edited, but you’re participating in that. If you go into deepfake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary.”
This topic was addressed when he was asked to share his opinion on last year’s incident when a Russian telecom commercial featured Bruce Willis’s face via deep fake technology. However, Willis’s reps told BBC at the time that he had “no partnership or agreement” with the company.

However, he also threw light on the positive impact that is currently in existence through the utilization of these advanced technologies.
“It’s going to be interesting to see how humans deal with these technologies. They’re having such cultural, sociological impacts, and the species is being studied. There’s so much ‘data’ on behaviors now. Technologies are finding places in our education, in our medicine, in our entertainment, in our politics, and how we war and how we work.”
Meanwhile, his John Wick: Chapter 4 has left the franchise surprised by surging past $432 million worldwide, becoming its highest-grossing movie.

John Wick: Chapter 4 will be available to watch on Starz on September 26.
