The Lion King’s worst hunting failure

Not as flashy and shiny as usual, the clip shows the lion’s poor ability to judge the terrain.

The Lion King's worst hunting failure
The lion, the king of the grassland, is an animal with superior terrestrial hunting ability. As the second strongest and largest species in the cat family, the difference between lions is that they live in groups.

A large pride of lions typically has a size of 15 – 40 animals, including many adult males, female lions and their cubs. The larger the herd, the more strength it shows, and the greater the number of males, the more it helps ensure the safety of the offspring.

When hunting, lions also follow the herd under the guidance of female lions.

Each female lion will have a unique role in the pride. Such positional distribution helps them hunt larger prey such as African buffalo, wildebeest or even giraffes.

Lions are characterized as opportunistic predators, possessing stealthy steps to follow their prey.

They will pounce on the animal closest to them without paying any attention to the age, gender or condition of the prey.

Male lions often hunt and ambush prey in places with dense vegetation, instead of hunting in large savannahs like what females often do.

They also often attack their prey at a much closer range (average 3.4 m) than females (8.6 m). This is completely consistent with the ambush hunting characteristics of lions.

The fastest way to defeat prey that African lions often use is to attack the prey’s respiratory system, bite or tear the throat.

When hunting alone, they kill their prey by biting their necks to break the neck or damage the blood circulation system.

When hunting in groups, lions can hold down large prey while other lions bite the neck or suffocate the prey by locking the victim’s muzzle, not allowing it to breathe.

Female lions, despite their smaller size, do the majority of the hunting and killing. In theory, yes, but the practice process doesn’t always run so smoothly. The clip below is an example.

Clip source: LatestSightings. The clip was filmed by Natasha, a tourist in South Africa. It is easy to recognize the desolate landscape, lacking the typical green color of the desert here.

If we pay close attention, we can see that the location where the clip was filmed seems to be a river or lake that is gradually becoming dry due to the hot sun here.

Normally, the lake is a favorite place for all animals to come to quench their thirst and avoid the sun. This has turned them into ideal hunting grounds for wild animals.

From Natasha’s perspective, a herd of gazelles were wandering around here, unaware that they were being observed by lions. When the time was ripe, the lion hiding in the hole decided to attack.

Everything seems perfect if the lion is not so focused on its prey that it forgets to observe the terrain where it attacks.

Instead of jumping into the nutritious meal, the lion was careless and jumped into a nearby water hole. This turned the proud lion into a laughing stock for all onlookers.

From the king of the jungle, the lion is now no different from a small, wet cat. The feeling of confusion and shame left him with no other choice but to give up.
