Solitary confinement is a painful and unsettling reality for anyone, in fact it is a mechanism used by society to punish those who have committed serious crimes.
But there are other creatures whose freedom is deprived from the moment they are born, like the case of a puppy who spent his whole life confined to the four walls of a garage.
Dick was rescued by the 30 Million d’Amis Foundation after a terrifying complaint warned the creature of a nightmare.
The dog was born in the garage of a property in Maizicourt, France and was locked there for more than nine years until he was rescued.
Flore, a researcher at the 30 Millions d’Amis Foundation, remembers sadly the day she met this fluffy guy.
“ In this garage it’s hot, sultry, and the smell is unbearable . Dick was crouching at the bottom of the black hole, on the ground covered with layers of dung.
When we arrived with a bucket of water, he was hesitant to approach, but he was so terrified that he went back to bed in the back of his hiding place , ”said the rescuer.
For the dog who knew nothing but the misery of this sad place, the entire outside world was a cause of immense terror.
“We tried to put him on a leash, but he refused to go any further . We carried him to the car where he snuggled into the seat. He hardly dared to look at us and was shaking so much,” Flore recounted on the day of the rescue.
Although the adaptation process was slow, the furry could be rescued and little by little he learned to trust his caregivers.
The foundation was in charge not only of rescuing the dog, but of proceeding legally against its owner by filing a formal complaint with the Domart gendarmerie in Ponthieu.
The owner decided to transfer Dick’s care to the foundation, who took the furry to the Buigny Saint Maclou shelter. In the place, the story of the dog moved all the keepers.
“Dick did not know the color of the sky, he had never felt the grass under his paws, not even the wind at the tip of his snout. He is still very disturbed. He is terribly afraid of humans. As soon as you get close, he freezes and shakes, ”explained Lydie at the time, from the shelter of Buigny.
Dick was rescued in May 2017 and is going through a slow process of adaptation. Sadly , her baby heart stopped beating in 2020, but at least for the last years of her life, she has known what true love is.
He had spent his whole life in that confinement and without the intervention of the background, his little eyes would never have known the sun.
As millions of Dick’s dogs go through a stormy life, your complaint can save them. Share this story and help raise awareness. Not another abuse!
